Stewardship Reflection

Prepared by Ven. Dr. Michael Pollesel.        Matthew 22: 1-14

There is a certain “edge” to this story, isn’t there? “Many are called, but few are chosen”. We know these words only too well. Some even use them jokingly. Do you think Jesus was joking? A wise steward will not only listen to these words, but take them to heart.

 

Change in Office hours

Office will be opened on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm this week.

 

Community Garden update – Cardboard needed!

We will be starting a small Indigenous/Native plant garden in the spring, in the triangular plot beside the fence and parking lot. To prepare for this, we need lots of cardboard to lay the ground before we top it off with autumn leaves and soil. If you have cardboard boxes to dispose of, please bring them to the PMC yard beside the shed. Flattened boxes with tape removed will be greatly appreciated.

 

Ieleen McKinney

We are sad to announce that Ieleen passed away peacefully on Tuesday night at the age of 101. Funeral details will be announced when available. Please contact the Rev Lilian Elliott lilian.elliott@telus.net for further information.

 

Pastoral Visiting Ministry

Following a recent review of the Pastoral Ministry at St. John’s, and in view of our rector Vivian’s current health situation, Joanne Walton has kindly agreed to continue to oversee this ministry in coordination with our interim priest Angus Stuart.  We are also grateful to Alma Oldenburg who is stepping away from coordinating this ministry with Joanne but is continuing as a member of the team.  There are currently eleven individuals involved in this ministry, including three new volunteers, who keep in touch with parishioners in need of such care via phone, Zoom, and in person.  The team will be getting together every couple of months after the 10am service on a Sunday to check-in and review needs and support one another.  This is a wonderful ministry at St. John’s that characterizes the loving spirit within our community where much informal care of one another continues daily.  If you or another parishioner you know would benefit from a visit, a phone call, or any help the team can offer please do get in touch with Joanne Walton at terrywalton@telus.net or our interim priest Angus Stuart at interim@stja.ca  If you feel you might be interested in joining this team, please connect with Joanne or Angus for more information.

Stewardship Summit

The upcoming Stewardship Summit will be held at the Synod Office, Saturday, October 28, 9:30am-1pm. The Summit is designed to equip participants with practical tools, insights, and inspiring stories that will renew the vision for giving within parishes. Fall Bazaar – November 4 from 10 am to 2.30 pm

Raffle: we are looking for donations of prizes for the raffle. If you are able to contribute one or two items to our Gourmet Basket (jam, crackers, pickles, spices, tea etc. – no alcohol please), please notify Sue Hall at sbhkaylacat@gmail.com or Ann Adair-Austin at cannadairaustin@gmail.com

Any other item or gift certificate that might be appropriate would be much appreciated also.

There will be a drop-off basket at the entrance of the church from October 15. Please have your donations in by Sunday October 29.

Cake Walk: We are looking for donations of cakes for the Cake Walk. If you can make a cake for this event, please notify Ann Adair-Austin.

Baked Goods, Jams & Pickles: Contributions will be gratefully accepted.

Sign-up sheets are posted on the wall of the stage. Please sign up to help at the event if you are able.

Any craft items, baked goods etc. for the Bazaar, can be dropped off at the church hall on Friday 3 November from 9am – 12pm.

We will be serving soup with a bun plus tea/coffee for $8, and a muffin with tea/coffee for $5. Tickets for these will be at the door.

Raffle Tickets will be on sale from 15 October.

ACW meeting

Thursday October 19th at 1pm at the church hall.

We will be finalizing our plans for the upcoming Parish Bazaar.

The ACW facilitates the St. John’s Sunshine Box, which sends out birthday cards (for those over 70), condolence cards, get well cards, and baptismal cards. If you know of any member of our parish who would be deserving of any of these greetings, please contact Lynne at: lgmilner@telus.net or Alma at: acw@stja.ca

 

Tri-Cities Winter Shelter at St. Laurence Coquitlam in October – Updated (formerly Cold Wet Weather Mat)

Helping Out with Children & Youth

We are looking for folks to help make our brainstormed ideas for children and youth spiritual formation a reality! We will be experimenting with fun, interactive activities for our younger members and visitors one Sunday a month beginning this September through December. If you’re interested in lending a hand on one of these Sundays, please let Janica know at administrator@stja.ca and she will connect you with clergy.
