The Church is the gathered people of God, who listen, discern, and act with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. There is no such thing as a solo Christian. When we are baptized into the body of Christ we become part of a very large and diverse family of faith through time and space. Coming together is an important part of our spiritual development. In the teaching, the fellowship, the breaking of bread, and the prayers, we have opportunities both to learn and to check our perceptions. Sometimes making decisions as a group is a messy process, and we don’t always get our way. But there is more wisdom among us than any one person brings. Listening for God means drawing the circle ever wider. Buildings can be holy spaces, but the true Church is without walls. Following the example of Jesus, who was sent into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to prepare for his public ministry, candidates for baptism spent the forty days before Easter learning how to be better disciples of Christ. The spiritual disciplines that evolved- penitence, prayer, fasting, acts of charity, studying scripture- came to be hallmarks for many Christians. If you count from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday (excluding the Sundays), Lent does indeed last for forty days. Tradition has been to give up a bad habit or take on something life-giving to practice. This is a helpful guide, but don’t stop when you get to Easter: God give you the courage to more clearly transmit the love of Christ as you go forward into the year. The E-postle-January 21, 2018 “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be * A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody * transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ * and sent out to share God’s Love” “Arise and go to Nineveh” –by Yamy Engelmeyer Hall Refreshment Project Going Forward You may have noticed a couple of changes in the parish hall in the last few months. One of the parish’s stated priorities this year was to take some concrete steps in dealing with building issues, and the hall has been a place to practice. A new arrangement of furniture has helped make the space more flexible for community use and increased notice space. The closet for the community food bank has been fitted with safer shelving. The choir room has been cleaned up and is in the midst of being painted. This coming week the hall floor is being re-waxed. Still to come is a decision on improvements to the Godly Play room space and audiovisual upgrades. None of these changes have been expensive, but then none of them has been able to address the larger concerns of accessibility or major renovations to the Church or Parish Ministry Centre. It will be up to the Vestry to discuss the financial implications and securing funding in order to proceed, so as to begin a ministry plan with your new incumbent. Samuel 3:10 What is Confirmation? Most of us are so attuned to our mobile phones that our attention is directed to the smallest swoosh or beep as a text or message come in. What would it be like if we were that attuned to God’s voice in our lives? Confirmation is an act of opening the connections for the Holy Spirit within us. Our intention to live out our baptismal ministry is met by God’s intention to empower us. The sacramental moment of the Bishop’s hands laid upon an individual in prayer is the outward and physical sign of this inward and spiritual grace. You may have been baptized years ago when your parents or sponsors promised to bring you up to know Christ in your life. Or you may have made those promises for yourself, but found your spiritual journey has led you on many twists and turns since then. The rite of Confirmation is the opportunity to invite the release of God’s spiritual gifts already within you and to mark the beginning of a deeper and more personal relationship with God. If you have already been confirmed, perhaps this is a significant time in your life when you want to re-affirm your faith. Or if your journey has brought you from another denominational tradition, you can mark that the Anglican Church is now your spiritual home by being formally received by the Bishop. The Epiphany E-postle 2017

December 31, 2017 “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be * A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody * transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ * and sent out to share God’s Love” the symbol for St. John the Apostle is the eagle A New Year for St. Johns This Sunday marks a double celebration for the Church. On December 27 is the Feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist. On January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany. So we are combining them on December 31. They both fall in the post-Christmas whirlwind of cookie crumbs and social invitations. And both set us back to work as Christians. Our patron saint’s career was to proclaim the gospel, and this community is called to follow him in evangelistic action. The coming of the magi to visit the Christ Child heralded the good news to all nations. We may not be called to write a major theological work or to travel across the world to witness, but each of us has a part to play in sharing the good news. Who of your parish family have you not seen in church over Christmas? Give them a call. Which of your neighbours or family can you invite to a service or event? Why not try and see what happens? What opportunity to go deeper in faith is speaking to your heart in 2018? Make it your new year’s resolution. This year, go deeper, go farther, go more boldly in faith, and see what riches God has in store for you at St. Johns. December 24, 2017 “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be * A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody * transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ * and sent out to share God’s Love” A Christmas Message In this season, hands are a little more generous, and hearts are a little kinder. We are reminded once more of what it means to be loved and vulnerable when God is a child among us. Why put away that Christmas spirit when we finish the holiday treats and take down the decorations? Let’s keep the Christ Mass all year round, every time we gather as people of faith. The origin of our feast is the Mass on the day of the Nativity when we see and hold Jesus in the bread and the wine blessed at the altar, hence “Christ-mass”. God is always with us in this sacrament we share. Let the angels surround you on every side and rejoice as you receive in your hands what our Creator has given out of love. Advent 3 Epostle – December 17, 2017

The E-postle Advent 3, December 17, 2017 “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be * A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody * transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ * and sent out to share God’s Love” Re-Sponse Deanery Update Re-Sponse is the group of dedicated individuals from deanery parishes working with the welcome and orientation of refugees in our area. The first refugee family that the group has sponsored is expected to arrive in late spring 2018. Currently, the deanery is engaging support for the application of a second family which is being privately sponsored. The brother living here has committed to raising money to support a widower and four children between the ages of 3-11 as well as an adult female relative. St. Johns, along with St. Catherine Port Coquitlam and St. Laurence Coquitlam, have agreed at parish council to support the application under the agreement holder of the Diocese of New Westminster. Housing and funding are being covered by the private sponsor, but should money fall short of the goal, parish fundraising will help supplement. A fundraising goal will be brought to the Annual Vestry Meeting for discussion. The Re-Sponse group is looking for a lay person from St. Johns to help out in this important outreach and communicate with the parish. Meetings are usually held monthly here at St. Johns on Tuesday evenings. As well, people who are willing to give time and energy to a fundraising event in the spring are sought. As we prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ birth, let’s involve our bodies and minds and hearts and spirits. If we pay attention to these four aspects of our humanity, we are more balanced and healthy individuals. Through them we find connection to our Creator and Redeemer and Sustainer.
