NEW THIS WEEK

Stewardship Reflection

Mark 8: 27-38Prepared by Van. Dr. M. Pollesel

“If any of you are ashamed of me and my message,” says Jesus. The faithful steward shows, in both word and action, pride in being a follower of Jesus.

Thank You

To The Rev Michael Chin for preaching and The Rev Angus Stuart for presiding at both services.

Janica – Our Administrator

As announced last Sunday, Janica’s home was flooded sometime last week and it is not possible for her and her 2 boys to remain there. She has been given notice to vacate and will not be able to return. We are collecting a love offering for her and this will be for the next 2 Sundays.

This is from her.

 A heartfelt Thank You

Dear St. John’s Community,

I am so thankful for your tremendous support during this difficult time for my children and I. Your kindness has truly touched my heart, and your generosity has been an absolute blessing to us. In the midst of uncertain times, your support has been a reminder to never doubt the love and grace of God. I am overwhelmed with gratitude… I appreciate each and every one of you.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Janica, Jordan, Johnny.

Memories

We understand that some of you would like to share your “Memories of Coming to St John”, but did not have the opportunity to do so. We will continue this sharing unti l the end of the year, in line with the 125 years of serving the Community. We will print your “Memories” in the E-Postle the following week, but are unable to include it the Commemorative Book.

Should you wish to share, please let Ruby know at peopleswarden@stja.ca as soon as possible.

The Spring Street Art Wall Project –  Mural update

United has had an Indigenous focus mural painted on a wall of their outside entry area. There will be a Community Blessing Ceremony and Feast on Wednesday October 9th 5:30 – 7:30 to honour this work. They are looking for 2-3 blankets to be knitted/crocheted to be used that evening.

If anyone is interested, please contact their church office at offce@inletunited.ca or 604 939-5513

“This summer I’ve slowly and steadily been getting stronger – only really been using my walker outside the house (and my wheelchair as a footrest while I’m on the couch ). Currently focusing on increasing how long I can walk w/o mobility aids. Finally felt safe to start driving again (more freedom! ) although Bascom still does the lion’s share of getting me to/from medical appts to minimize my stress levels. Continuing at the cancer centre every 3 weeks for my immunotherapy infusion, and am waiting to start a monthly bone-strengthening med very soon that I can hopefully self-administer at home. My jam-packed medical summer also included having all my wisdom teeth out (bone treatment prerequisite) and getting my 1st progressive lenses which I guess means I’ve finally hit peak middle age…

Other than that, returning to work is finally feeling possible (can’t believe I’ve been on medical leave for a year!!! ) So have a lot of planning and decisions to make re: what that transition might look like. Thank you for everyone’s ongoing good wishes and prayers – they have been and continue to be so much a part of my healing journey!

PS – got in a trip to Tofino last month with Bascom – felt especially sweet as had to cancel our trip last summer due to being in hospital. I had to take it easy and rest a lot more than on past trips, but the change of scenery was wonderful!”

INFORMATION

New roof for PMC
In June, we applied for the Community Prosperity Fund, from the Government of British Columbia which is working in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation. This fund is part of the Province of B.C.’s commitment to supporting the non-profit sector and empowering local communities to make local decisions.

We have now received approval and the grant will be used towards replacing the roof of the PMC.

Help Wanted!!!

Volunteers are urgently needed for the following ministries:

USHERS – Work in pairs, once a month, for the 10:00am service, to greet parishioners & visitors and hand out the Sunday bulletin.

ALTAR GUILD – Work in teams of 3, once a month (usually on a Saturday), to set out the Sunday Eucharist for the 8:30am & 10:00am services.

If you think you would like to offer your time to either of these important ministries, please contact Bonnie SooChan at 604-945-8465 or e-mail bsoochan@shaw.ca It would be greatly appreciated.

ACW Meeting on Thursday, 19 September at 12 noon

We will be holding a Pot Luck Luncheon before the meeting, so please bring a food item to share. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the hall for those wishing to attend.

Clothing Swap Meet on Saturday 21 September – 2 to 4 pm

Back again to Swap our clothes just in time for the change of season!  Textile waste is one of the top polluters and climate change problems, but as a community we can start being part of the solution instead of the problem. Let’s share and swap!

Come by to swap your good condition clothes you no longer wear, but someone else might!

Bring any of your pre-loved clothes that you no longer need or use but are too good to dispose of. These clothes should be ready to wear by someone else. In return, you can take as many items as you want from the swap. Clothing should be freshly clean, with no tears, rips, or stains. We are accepting all sizes in adults, children, and even infant clothes. Clothes can include accessories, scarves, mitts, and even costume jewelry!  Not accepting shoes.

*New this time! Accepting kitchen gadgets and small appliances in working condition.  Bring any of your unused or clean working condition gadgets you no longer use and are cluttering your kitchen!  There is a request for an olive pitter! ????

There is no charge for this event. We look forward to building a community of sharing!

Framed Pictures in the Hall

The framed pictures are part of Sue Hall’s treasures.  If you would like one, please use the Donation jar and it’s yours to enjoy. Watch for changes each week.

Gala Dinner – Saturday 28 September 2024 @ 6 pm

The culmination of the 125th Anniversary celebrations will be a Gala Dinner, to be held in St Laurence Church, Coquitlam. We now have tickets for family and friends of the Parish.

Tickets priced at $75 are now on sale by Antoinette.

Support for Access Youth continue ….

We are collecting flour and rice for the months of August and September.

Please place your donations by the font at the entrance of the church.

As a reminder, we are only collecting these 2 items.  Please do not bring in other items as this does not operate like a food bank.  They prepare meal kits for families to cook a meal together. They distribute required portions of ingredients to prepare the meal they are delivering.

For info on Access Youth and what they do, please log in to: https://accessyouth.org/youth-gour-made/
