Stewardship Reflection

Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 – Prepared by Van. Dr. M. Pollesel

Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus reminds them that: ‘‘this people honours me with their lips, but their heart stays away from me.’ It kind of frightens me that he might be able to say the same about me!

ACW Meeting on Thursday, 19 September at 12 noon

We will be holding a Pot Luck Luncheon before the meeting, so please bring a food item to share. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the hall for those wishing to attend.

Clothing Swap Meet on Saturday 21 September – 2 to 4 pm

Back again to Swap our clothes just in time for the change of season!  Textile waste is one of the top polluters and climate change problems, but as a community we can start being part of the solution instead of the problem. Let’s share and swap!

Come by to swap your good condition clothes you no longer wear, but someone else might!

Bring any of your pre-loved clothes that you no longer need or use but are too good to dispose of. These clothes should be ready to wear by someone else. In return, you can take as many items as you want from the swap. Clothing should be freshly clean, with no tears, rips, or stains. We are accepting all sizes in adults, children, and even infant clothes. Clothes can include accessories, scarves, mitts, and even costume jewellery!  Not accepting shoes.

*New this time! Accepting kitchen gadgets and small appliances in working condition.  Bring any of your unused or clean working condition gadgets you no longer use and are cluttering your kitchen!  There is a request for an olive pitter! ????

There is no charge for this event. If you are interested to participate, please register your interest with Ruby at peopleswardenstja.ca. Looking forward to building a community of sharing!

Exploring Land Development  and Gifting

Saturday September 7 Kerry Baisley (the now retired Diocesan Indigenous Missioner)

Salve Making and discussion, ending with lunch 10:00am – 1:00pm

As we continue to investigate how we can use the property on which the church building and Ministry Centre stand, and the parking lot, understanding the Indigenous traditions of respecting land and using the land in a positive way will lay a good foundation. At the Diocesan Conference this past spring, Kerry offered a similar presentation as part of the Diocesan process for respectfully doing land development.

On Saturday we will experience the use of plants that grow around us as we learn to make poplar, chickweed and calendula salve that is used for skin treatment. This will be done in the context of discussion around Kerry’s presentation and we will conclude with sharing a provided lunch together.

Please contact deacon@stja.ca to let us know if you plan to attend, quantity and lunch needs.

Gala Dinner – Saturday 28 September 2024 @ 6 pm

The culmination of the 125th Anniversary celebrations will be a Gala Dinner, to be held in St Laurence Church, Coquitlam. Tickets priced at $75 are now on sale by Ann Adair-Austin, Sharon Cooper, and Bonnie SooChan. As we have a limited number, we will sell to our parishioners (and spouses) first, up until 13 Sept, after which it will be open to family members and friends.

Late Summer Community Event – Movie Night

The results from both paper and online surveys showed that most people favour Tuesday 10 September in regular (non-VIP) theatre. The next step will be “Which Movie”? Suggestions may go to Laurie Fox at
foxclan@me.com

Support for Access Youth continue ….

We are collecting flour and rice for the months of August and September.

Please place your donations by the font at the entrance of the church.

As a reminder, we are only collecting these 2 items.  Please do not bring in other items as this does not operate like a food bank.  They prepare meal kits for families to cook a meal together. They distribute required portions of ingredients to prepare the meal they are delivering.

For info on Access Youth and what they do, please log in to: https://accessyouth.org/youth-gour-made/

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PART OF ST JOHN’S

Rosemary and Eddy Morrissey

Coming from the Caribbean Island of Antigua and Barbuda, church on Sundays was compulsory for us. We had no choice.  Sundays were considered special and holy. We were brought up in the Anglican and Mission Churches with our parents and attended both church and Sunday School on Sundays. Most of the songs and scriptures in the Bible we had to know from childhood, and we were able to recite many of these by memory.

I moved to BC in 1969 and Rosemary joined me later in 1972, after we got married in New York. We lived in 4 different areas of Vancouver where we attended church regularly before moving to Burnaby in 1980. We then attended St. Nicholas Church in Burnaby for several years with our three children. They were

confirmed at St. Nicholas, and we all served in various areas during that time. Eventually St. Nicholas amalgamated with another church and was later sold.

We had to find another church. We knew both Pronella and Jerome Daniel as members of St. John’s, and they invited us to come to their church. From our first visit at St. John’s, we liked the church and made up our minds that this would be the church we would attend. As always, the visitors are warmly greeted and

welcomed, but there were two people who stood out in their hospitality. One was Sylvia Bradley.  She informed us that she was from Birmingham, England and I then shared with her that I had visited her city to play cricket in 1999. Birmingham, being well-known and rich in cricket history, caused us to have many conversations about cricket, as well as tennis. The other person was Anne Anchor.  She was always very helpful regarding church matters, as well as getting Rosemary involved in teaching the kids in Sunday School. We continued attending St. John’s because we felt it was a good fit for us.

Rosemary and I are a reserved, private couple and take life the way it comes. We have three children, two boys who live here with their families, and our daughter and family who live in Edmonton.  We enjoy spending time with our grandchildren, some of whom we take care of before and after school.

We are blessed and rich in family, especially when we are all together as we were this summer as we gathered to celebrate birthdays as well as our 52nd anniversary in July. Many thanks to St. John’s and the people here for allowing us to be part of their family.
