NEW THIS WEEK

Stewardship Reflection

Mark 12 28-34. Prepared by Ven. Dr. M. Pollesel

Love God, love your neighbour, love yourself; a good steward knows how to live this out in the midst of all the demands life seems to make.

Change Your Clocks!  Sunday 3 November to Fall Back by one hour.

Condolences offered: We are saddened to announce that our rector Vivian Lam’s father, Peter, passed away on 18 October, 2024.Flowers and condolences were sent on behalf of the parish.

Cold Weather Shelter- Information Session: Saturday November 30th, 10:00 – 12:00
St. Laurence Anglican in Coquitlam is hosting the Cold Weather Shelter in February 2025. They will be holding an information session for anyone who may be interested in preparing or serving a breakfast or a dinner during the month of February or helping out in other ways for the month.
We will be offering some days for individuals of the parish to sign up to make sandwiches throughout the month, more info to follow closer to February.  We will also be collecting sundry food items at that time.

Butternut Squash Night: Saturday November 16 from 5.30 pm.

We have an amazing harvest of butternut squashes from the Community Garden. “The Garden Committee” has decided to have an evening of all-things butternut, starting with soup, followed by savory & sweet muffins, cupcakes and possibly some other treats. It will be $8 per person. If interested, please connect with Ruby or Karen so we can ensure that there is enough to eat. Sign-up sheets are in the hall.

Closing Service and Potluck: Sunday 17 November, 2024

A special service to close off the celebrations for the 125th Anniversary of St John’s, followed by a Potluck lunch after the 10 am service.

It has been suggested that we have a melting pot of cuisines with the diverse cultures that we have. You may bring a dish from your ethnic background and wear a national dress/shirt.

Sign-up sheets are in the hall.

Wildlife Congregations: A Priest’s Year of Gaggles, Colonies and Murders by the Salish Sea by The Rev. Laurel Dykstra

We purchased 2 books, and they are in the Library in the Parish Hall. You may borrow but please return after use.

A naturalist-priest documents a year of spiritual encounters with large gatherings of wild creatures in the lower Fraser watershed. These local low-tech adventures with a run of spawning salmon, a siege of nesting herons, a colony of bats in a heritage house, a gaggle of geese, a murder of crows, 1000 sea lions with bad breath and more are an antidote to interspecies loneliness in this age of extinction. A moving testament to both the fragility and resilience of a bioregion impacted by our current climate crisis, the book offers entry points for all kinds of readers. Dykstra twines together accessible natural history, love of language, the history of saints and clerics in the natural sciences, and gratuitous detours into the weird and wonderful: gay bat sex, exploding caterpillars, and the colonization history of bird poop. Each chapter includes a wealth of resources, from field guides to fiction, for nature enthusiasts of all ages.

Commemorative T-shirts

A very generous parishioner has commissioned some T-Shirts to be made in celebration of St John’s 125th Anniversary. They are on sale for $35 for sweat shirts and $30 for T-shirts. All proceeds will go to the church fund-raising. Please approach Antoinette or Ruby should you wish to buy one.

It would take very little of your time. If you think you might be the right person, please let Ruby know at peopleswarden@stja.ca  For more info, please go to https://pwrdf.org/our-new-name/
