NEW THIS WEEK

Stewardship Reflection:

Mark 6: 30-34,53-56.   Prepared by Ven. Dr. M Pollesel

Imagine, being so famous that people are always wanting you! Small wonder Jesus invites his followers to “an isolated place,” where they can “recharge their batteries.” A faithful steward knows to take time and do this.

A New Look!

On July 7th, The Rev. Miranda welcomed two new coordinators for the Parish Visiting Ministry.

After prayerful consideration and sharing about the role with outgoing coordinator Joanne Walton, in thanksgiving, Debora Jones-Akiyama and Antoinette Woodman will now coordinate this pastoral ministry at St. John’s. Please forward requests to pastoralvisits@stja.ca

We are grateful for their caring hearts that will reach out to those in care, in hospital, or homebound. It is a team effort with Mother Miranda.  We are “in good hands”.

INFORMATION

Vivian continues to be in good spirits while receiving immunology treatment every 3 weeks, for another year. She is able to walk with crutches for more than a few steps, but relies on a wheelchair for outdoor trips.

And she does not need a headscarf anymore!

She thanked everyone in the Parish for their prayers, love, support, flowers and nutritious food. Updated 14 July, 2024

Message from Jennifer Blatherwick, ED of Access Youth

Please share our thanks with your congregation. Thank you so much for hosting us over the past months, you stepped in and allowed our program to continue at a very difficult time. Because of your partnership, we were able to deliver more than 800 hampers, which works out to just over 3000 meals for people in our community.  That doesn’t include the donation of oil and salt, and the meals (via Spring Street Community Kitchen) that St. John’s generously donated, which our families deeply appreciated.

The flower basket at the altar is gifted by Access Youth, in appreciation.

Design of Souvenir Programme Cover

As announced last Sunday, we are looking for a design for the above. We would like your input on what should be included. Please forward all ideas to Rohini at news@stja.ca by 28 July, 2024.

High Tea – Thursday August 15, 1 – 3 pm

One of the main fundraisers for the church, this event is for friends and family of the Parish.

As it was a hit last year with the “Bring Your Own China”, we will be doing this again this year. We invite you to bring your personal teapots, cups & saucers, and 3 tier serving stands and these should be brought on the day of the tea. You are encouraged to “buy a table” of 4s, 6s or 8s for your family or besties. Tickets are on sale at $40, and as it is limited to only 60 seats, you may want to get yours from Antoinette at toni.woodman@shaw.ca or Sue Meredith at smeredith@shaw.ca

If anyone has 3 tier serving stands that we can borrow, it will be very much appreciated. Please contact Ferne mfernem@icloud.com or Ann at cannadairaustin@gmail.com

Choir Practice Notice

Choir has finished their Friday rehearsals for the summer. There will be no choir rehearsal until September. Watch this space for further announcements when choir rehearsals will resume.

Bag Hunger … Ongoing till end of September

Access Youth, need our help. They are short of basic cooking staples and our Parish has committed to helping them. Show them you care with a donation of cooking oil (1 litre bottle) and/or salt.

We will run for June & July, and then we will switch to Flour and Rice for August and September.

Please pick up a brown paper bag at church to announce your pledge to support these families and bring it back with cooking oil and/or salt.

For info on Access Youth and what they do, please log in to: https://accessyouth.org/youth-gour-made/

Daniela Daza’s Memories

Arriving in Canada was an overwhelming experience for my family and me. We were just beginning to adapt to a new country, facing challenges we had never imagined. Lost and disoriented, we felt like strangers in an unfamiliar land. However, everything changed the day we first entered Saint John’s Church.

Despite barely understanding the language, from the moment we walked through the church doors, we felt welcomed like family. The warmth we received was a balm during that cold winter. I clearly remember the feeling of relief and comfort that enveloped us, something we desperately needed at that time.

From that first day, we met wonderful people who extended a helping hand and offered us their unconditional support. They helped us in so many ways that I don’t know how we could have endured the change without them. Thanks to their love, warmth, kindness, and those genuine smiles, we found a home away from home.

The meals and activities they organized made us feel even more at home. We enjoyed talking with them and listening to their stories, which made our transition so much easier and more enjoyable.

If it weren’t for the community at Saint John’s, we would probably have considered returning to our country. But thanks to you, we found the strength to move forward and adapt to our new life in Canada. We can never thank you enough for everything you have done for us.
