NEW THIS WEEK

Daylight Savings Time Begins

A friendly reminder that clocks turn back one hour this weekend… enjoy the extra hour of sleep this Sunday morning Nov. 6!

Communion Wine

We will be reintroducing communion wine this coming Sunday, for those comfortable receiving it. Receiving communion wine is relatively low-risk for COVID, but to minimize risk further, especially in cold/flu season, we ask that anyone symptomatic or not feeling well to refrain from taking wine (even better, stay home!). Other precautions will include: a socially-distanced wine receiving area, only taking off masks in that area, and the chalice being carefully wiped and turned after each use.

You are welcome to continue receiving the bread alone if you wish; as before, please stay masked while receiving and bring the bread back to your seat before consuming.

Stewardship Reflection

Luke 6:20-31 – Sunday by Sunday: Reflections on Stewardship, prepared by the Ven. Dr. Michael Pollesel. “Jesus gives many clues as to what a steward’s life will look like. How many of them would describe the way you live your life?”

Stewardship Pledge Forms

We invite you to return your Financial Pledge Forms by All Saints’ Sunday, November 6, and pray about how you might give of your time and talents in 2023. Download the pledge form from our website.

ACW Service of Thanksgiving

The ACW is a planning a brief service of thanksgiving for four members of the parish and our ACW who died during the years of the pandemic. We will remember Addie Favelle, Joyce Rexin, Marilyn Pollock, and Mickey Marshall and their contribution to the parish family.  It will take place after the ACW meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 2pm, followed by a tea in the hall.  If you wish to come, please RSVP to Joanne Walton or Ferne Malcolm.

Church Calendars

Available for purchase at $7 each during coffee hour from Sharon Cooper (8:30am service) and Antoinette Woodman (10:00am service).

Adjusted Office Hours This Week

The Parish Office will be closed on Friday Nov. 11 for Remembrance Day. Office hours this week will be Tuesday Nov. 8 and Thursday Nov. 10, 9am-3pm.

“Christmas at Sea” for the Mission to Seafarers

You can bring a smile to the face of another person, in this case, a seafarer at Christmas. We are showing that we care and are grateful for what they do. We are collecting donations of toques, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, chocolates, and souvenirs.

There is a basket at the back of the church for the items, which will be delivered to the Mission and put into individual bags. On Christmas Eve, they are brought out to the ships and for the days afterwards.

To make a monetary donation you may do so at https://www.flyingangel.ca/pages/donate

Bishop’s Visit

As we prepare for Bishop John’s Visit on Nov. 27, a menu and sign-up sheets for the reception (after 10am service) will be posted on the bulletin board in the kitchen. Should you wish to contribute a dish or 2, you may sign up as an individual, in pairs or as a group. Please contact Ruby at peopleswarden@stja.ca if you wish for the menu to be emailed to you.

There will be a wreath-making session after the 10am service.

Two graduates of EfM (Education for Ministry) of the parish, Natasha MacDonald and Ruby Ng, who did not have a formal ceremony due to COVID, will also be presented with their certificates at the 10am service.

Nightly Winter Shelter Program… Cold Wet Weather Mat Program

The return of a greatly needed program in the Tri-Cities

St. Laurence Church is hosting the Cold Weather Mat Program for the month of January. There will be an orientation December 10th, 9:30-11am in the hall at St. Laurence to hear more about the program and have an opportunity to sign up.

There will be many ways to participate…

    • supplies for daily bagged lunches.  We will be collecting juice boxes, granola bars, home baked cookies or bars, pudding or fruit cups, chip bags, and providing sandwiches with protein (meat, cheese, eggs) and a fruit or veggie snack.
    • warm winter clothing – coats, hats, gloves, scarves, shoes or boots, sweaters, shirts, pants, socks (new) and underwear (new)
    • toiletries – shampoo, small soaps, toothbrushes/ paste, floss, deodorants, shaving products, chap stick.

Anne Anchor will be attending the orientation. If you would like to help in some way and are unable to attend the meeting, please contact her at deacon@stja.ca with info about what area you would like to help in and, if applicable, the days and shifts you would be interested in helping with.

Also, a sign-up sheet will be set up after dates are chosen where people can provide supplies for the daily bagged lunches.

Wardens’ Note:

2 more months to the end of our financial year and contributions are at a lower level than in the past. We’re writing to ensure that everyone is aware of the current financial situation we are facing. Please take some time to prayerfully discern whether you are able to contribute a little more to assist the parish and the wider community as we follow our mission.

Parish Giving

Giving can be made through e-transfer directly to the church account, please contact Ruby at peopleswarden@stja.ca or Sheila at treasurer@stja.ca for more details.

Church Pews Adjustment

Following feedback, we have yet again moved the pews to allow better accessibility as well as provide a little more space at the centre aisle.  With the reintroduction of communion wine, we are expecting more adjustments may be necessary to accommodate everyone. Feedback to Ruby at peopleswarden@stja.ca

Deanna’s Departure

Our Office Administrator Deanna Lemke will be leaving us, as she moves out of the area. Her last day will be this Thursday, Nov. 10. Paula Minetti, who was here with us last spring, will be providing temporary office coverage upon her departure.

We are so grateful for Deanna’s wonderful presence and her work supporting all that goes on at St. John’s, and we wish her God’s blessings in her new home. She wanted to let everyone know: “I have enjoyed working with such kind people and am grateful for my time with St. John the Apostle.”

COVID Protocols

We ask that all still remain vigilant in regards to COVID infections. By staying home if you are unwell and letting the clergy or wardens know if you have tested positive, we will avoid further spread in our community. Masks are required at worship.
