The E-postle – March 4, 2018

“The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be *          A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody *          transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ *          and sent out to share God’s Love” this David Walker cartoon originally appeared in the Church Times, UK., but Canadian Anglicans aren’t so different!   What Does a Parish Council Actually Do? Every local church community, under the Diocesan Canons, has persons who hold public responsibility along with the clergy for the life and business of the Parish.  At the Annual Vestry meeting, all the members of the congregation present elect or appoint those who will serve on the Parish Council or Church Committee, as it is sometimes called.  Along with the licensed clergy, these are:  the Church Wardens (right now a Bishop’s Warden and a People’s Warden), 3 Lay Delegates to Synod, 3 Alternate Lay Delegates, the Treasurer, the Council Secretary, and 3 Members-at-Large.   Members of the Parish Council are also Trustees of the Parish by the act of Incorporation for St. John the Apostle, Port Moody. Parish Council members meet regularly to oversee the decision-making processes of the parish.  They assist the Wardens and Treasurer in reviewing finances, overseeing property matters, initiating and supporting ministry and outreach, and setting and implementing goals for mission.  Every person brings particular gifts and insights to their roles which strengthen the whole. In the time between incumbents, some members of the Parish Council also form a Canonical Committee, which has responsibility for preparing a parish profile to advertise for a new priest and subsequently interviewing candidates for the position.  Those on Parish Council who are not part of the Canonical Committee (Council Secretary, Treasurer, Members-at-Large and clergy) continue the work of the parish and support the steps needed to...

The E-postle – Lent 1, 2018

February 18, 2018 blessing of solar panels, greenfaith.org “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be *          A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody *          transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ *          and sent out to share God’s Love” The Church When you think of a church, do you imagine the building or the people meeting within it?  The Church is the gathered people of God, who listen, discern, and act with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  There is no such thing as a solo Christian.  When we are baptized into the body of Christ we become part of a very large and diverse family of faith through time and space. Coming together is an important part of our spiritual development.  In the teaching, the fellowship, the breaking of bread, and the prayers, we have opportunities both to learn and to check our perceptions.  Sometimes making decisions as a group is a messy process, and we don’t always get our way.  But there is more wisdom among us than any one person brings. Listening for God means drawing the circle ever wider.  Buildings can be holy spaces, but the true Church is without walls. Yours in Christ, Stephanie + Upcoming Dates February 18- 10 am Annual Vestry Meeting beginning with Holy Eucharist February 20- 10:30-noon, “Meeting Jesus in John” Lenten study February 23-25- Spiritual Formation Weekend at Loon Lake “Prayer Beyond Words” February 25- 8:30 am & 10 am, guest presider the Rev. The E-postle February 11, 2018  Washington Cathedral window, copyright from flickr.com/photos/mjhbixby6/5700689477/  “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be *          A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody *          transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ *          and sent out to share God’s Love”  The Meaning of Lent In the circle of the Church year, the forty days that come before Easter are known as the season of Lent.  Following the example of Jesus, who was sent into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to prepare for his public ministry, candidates for baptism spent the forty days before Easter learning how to be better disciples of Christ.  The spiritual disciplines that evolved- penitence, prayer, fasting, acts of charity, studying scripture- came to be hallmarks for many Christians.  If you count from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday (excluding the Sundays), Lent does indeed last for forty days.  Tradition has been to give up a bad habit or take on something life-giving to practice.  This is a helpful guide, but don’t stop when you get to Easter: God give you the courage to more clearly transmit the love of Christ as you go forward into the year. Yours in Christ, Stephanie + Upcoming Dates February 11- 11:15 am, Q & A in church on Napier Property proposal following 10 am service 11:45 am, Liturgy Group meeting in vestry 2 pm, Canonical Committee meets with                                       regional archdeacon February 13- 10:30-noon, and 7-8:30 pm, “Meeting Jesus in the gospel of John” begins 4-5 pm, Catechism Group in the parish hall February 14- Ash Wednesday:  pancake supper 6 pm, services 8:30 am and 7:30 pm February 15- 1:30 pm, Anglican Church...

The E-postle-January 21, 2018   “The Parish of St. John the Apostle is called to be *          A Spirited Community at the heart of Port Moody *          transformed through the experience of the presence of Christ *          and sent out to share God’s Love”  “Arise and go to Nineveh” –by Yamy Engelmeyer  Hall Refreshment Project Going Forward You may have noticed a couple of changes in the parish hall in the last few months.  One of the parish’s stated priorities this year was to take some concrete steps in dealing with building issues, and the hall has been a place to practice.  A new arrangement of furniture has helped make the space more flexible for community use and increased notice space.  The closet for the community food bank has been fitted with safer shelving.  The choir room has been cleaned up and is in the midst of being painted.  This coming week the hall floor is being re-waxed. Still to come is a decision on improvements to the Godly Play room space and audiovisual upgrades.  None of these changes have been expensive, but then none of them has been able to address the larger concerns of accessibility or major renovations to the Church or Parish Ministry Centre.  It will be up to the Vestry to discuss the financial implications and securing funding in order to proceed, so as to begin a ministry plan with your new incumbent. Yours in Christ, Stephanie + Upcoming Dates January 18- 1:30 pm, ACW Annual Meeting in parish hall January 19-20- painting of choir room January 23-24- stripping and waxing of parish hall. No groups in hall these days January 24- Group and Committee reports due to parish office for Annual Vestry January 24- 4-5 pm, Catechism Group in the PMC (note: after this week...
