We will be gathering beforehand at 10 am to give the church a thorough cleaning before the Bishop’s visit with us. Cleaning equipment and products will be supplied, but please feel free to bring in any other items you prefer to use such as long handle dusters, mini vacs, or your favourite cleaning cloth etc.

Please bring a lunch (tea and coffee will be provided), as we will have a short break in between cleaning and the meeting.

Mary Kyle’s MEMORIES of Coming to St John – 28 April 2024

I started coming to St John’s about 35 years ago when my children were young.

As a child myself, I went to Christ the King Anglican Church in Burnaby which is now known as St. Timothy’s.  In those days the Sunday School was full of children, but I always enjoyed church more than Sunday School.  As a young teenager I started going to the 8 o’clock service, appreciating the quiet, contemplative ambience – it was very much like the early service here at St. John’s which I also love.

Although I got married in the church, my husband didn’t like the Anglican church so I tried going to churches of various denominations hoping that there would be one that we could go to together.  But he didn’t come to any of them.  So I had been thinking of returning to the Anglican Church, which I missed, when I met another mom at the preschool that our children attended. She spoke enthusiastically to me about her own church–St. John’s; and encouraged me to come.  So, I started going there and immediately felt welcome.  Even with four children squirming in the pews, I always felt that we were accepted and unjudged.  There were people from various cultures and backgrounds, and I loved the diversity.  My children and I looked forward to the coffee hour with the delicious treats at the end of every service.  My kids enjoyed Sunday School and special occasions like the pancake dinners, church picnics and the bazaars where they were able to buy Christmas gifts for family members and take part in the cakewalk and kids’ games.

I knew from being involved in my last church that it was important for me to get involved with small groups of people so I could feel comfortable in a large group.  Since I am shy and quiet, I had felt on the periphery at that last church until I got to know a few other people through helping as a counter and joining a Bible Study group.  So very soon after joining St. John’s, I started teaching Sunday School, joined the Bible Study Group, and became a counter.  Later I joined the parish council, became a hospital visitor, and helped out with the Thursday Lunch at the food bank here.

I got to know so many wonderful people through these and other groups and I feel that they are my second family.

One of the things I have liked about St. John’s is its commitment to outreach,  Helping people through its food bank and lunch program was especially important to me, but I also love that we support refugees through the Deanery ReSponse Group, and unhoused people through the Tri City Winter Shelter program and in the past we had supported the Gordon Shelter by  volunteering to work in their Clothing Donation Room.  I also love that our ACW is so dedicated to raising funds through their Bazaars and Spring Teas.  These funds go to our own church when they are needed, as well as supporting numerous secular and non-secular charities. Also does a good job of providing help to those in need, which I feel is an essential responsibility of every church, and it is full of kind, faithful, caring people who I love to be with.

National Indigenous Peoples Day June 21st 2024

We have been asked again by Tasha Faye Evans the coordinator of NIPD in Port Moody to supply some knitted blankets for the ceremony in the evening at Rocky Point.

More details to follow about the ceremony but for now I am calling upon all knitters to offer their talent in this ministry towards Reconciliation. We have been asked to provide 10 blankets. We will be making them more in the dimension of prayer shawls this year, so, a bit smaller than past years. We should have them completed by June 2nd for blessing before we pass them on.

National Indigenous Peoples Day  thank you to all who have volunteered to knit blankets for honouring this day. More information will follow about further planning for this day.

Please contact Anne Anchor at deacon@stja.ca for details regarding size, colour and wool weight.

125th Anniversary Celebration

Sunday May 26, 2024 at 10 am

As part of our 125 years as a place of worship within the community of Port Moody, we would like to acknowledge those of you were either married or baptised, (or possibly both) at St John’s – at any time in its history. We have invited Bishop John Stephens of the Diocese of New Westminster to join us and lead us in worship. The service will be a celebration of our anniversary, focusing on the sacraments of baptism and marriage in our community. Those who were baptised at St. John’s will be invited to re-affirm their baptismal vows during the services.

There will be a light lunch following the 10 am service. We hope that you can join us for this special celebration. For further information, please contact Ruby at peopleswarden@stja.ca or Janica at administrator@ stja.ca
