INFORMATION

Design of Souvenir Programme Cover

As announced last Sunday, we are looking for a design for the above. We would like your input on what should be included. Please forward all ideas to Rohini at news@stja.ca by 28 July, 2024.

High Tea – Thursday August 15, 1 – 3 pm

One of the main fundraisers for the church, this event is for friends and family of the Parish.

As it was a hit last year with the “Bring Your Own China”, we will be doing this again this year. We invite you to bring your personal teapots, cup & saucers, and 3 tier serving stands and these should be brought on the day of the tea. You are encouraged to “buy a table” of 4s, 6s or 8s for your family or besties.

Tickets will be on sale in mid-July at $40, and as it is limited to only 60 seats, you may want to reserve yours from Antoinette at toni.woodman@shaw.ca or Sue Meredith at smeredith@shaw.ca

If anyone who has 3 tier serving stands that we can borrow, it will be very much appreciated. Please contact Ferne mfernem@icloud.com or Ann cannadairaustin@gmail.com

Update from the ReSponse Committee

The Syrian family that arrived in August 2023 sends a Big Thank You to St John’s Church for our monetary gift for supplies for their new baby girl.   Deacon Pat Ratcliffe, who is the coordinator of the Deanery ReSponse Group, and I (Mary) went to visit them a couple of weeks ago. St. Laurence also had a cheque for the family and we gave them a beautiful layette put together by the Diocesan ACW.   The family was so grateful for everything.  We had a lovely visit and Pat and I were able to see and hold their little baby who was only two weeks old at the time.  This family lives in Pitt Meadows in a one-bedroom basement suite which is very tight.  They have been looking for a two-bedroom suite to rent in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area.  If anyone knows of one, please speak to myself (Mary Kyle), Laurie Fox, Karlis Kesans or Sheila De Vaal so we can pass on the information.

The other family that was sponsored by the group of 5 and supported by the ReSponse Team, arrived in May.  The group of 5 supplied all the furnishings, groceries and start-up supplies as they also did with the family mentioned above and the original family back in 2018.

The family that arrived in June 2024 that many people in our church and St. Laurence supported with friendship and time, money, furnishings, etc. has settled in very well.  It is always a joy to see them–they are such a happy, grateful family!

Kathleen Scharf’s memories

Growing up, my very best friend’s mother, who was like a second mother to me, would say “Tell the truth and shame the devil”. Well, to tell the truth and shame the devil, until the beginning of April I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward each Sunday to hearing “Memories of Coming to St John’s”. I was sure that, as a very recent member of St John’s, I would not be called upon to share my memories. But then in April Ruby asked me if I would share my memories with the congregation. As you can see, I said yes and I began to pay even closer attention to the memories shared and to think about what I could possibly add.

While it’s true that I’ve only been attending St John’s regularly since September, I did attend a service several years ago when I was a member of St Laurence. I came because I had learned that Donald Grayston, a relatively new friend at that time, was the interim priest here. It was close to the end of Donald’s time at St John’s so I only came once but thoroughly enjoyed and remembered the service. Donald’s sermon was based upon Ezekiel’s visit to the Valley of Dry Bones. I remember it to this day as Donald incorporated and sang “Dem bones Dem bones Dem dry bones”. I also remember the warmth of the welcome I received on that visit.

Because I had been welcomed warmly by the congregation, it seemed natural that I should return to St John’s at a time when I was searching for a church and a congregation in which I felt more “at home”. Admittedly I came with some trepidation but, as so many others have shared in their memories, I was greeted warmly and made to feel very welcome. On that first Sunday, I mistook Christine Stuart, whom I only saw from the back, as a friend. As it turned out, Christine was a friend I just hadn’t met yet and I looked forward to our Sunday coffee visits just as I looked forward to Angus’ sermons, particularly after I learned that he and Donald Grayston were such good friends. It seemed like synchronicity when I learned of Angus’ deep friendship with Donald who had graduated from Mirfield College of the Resurrection with my late brother-in-law, Brian Scharf.

In another instance of “what a small world it is”, I recognized another face from the past but couldn’t put a name to it. Happily, it was our lovely Betty Moore who reminded me that many years ago, she had been one of my students when I taught grade 12 History at Centennial Secondary Night School. She was so complimentary of my classes that it made me remember how much I had enjoyed teaching those classes. And what teacher wouldn’t be proud of a student like Betty?!

As well as having met and made friends with so many lovely people since coming to St John’s, a truly important part of church for me, I’ve really appreciated the services provided and led by both Angus and Miranda with such able assistance from Anne. What I find so inspiring is that, although each has a unique approach to ministry, all are welcomed and appreciated by the congregation.

Finally, I’ve taken Sylvia’s advice and the examples set by previous St John’s “memory keepers” to heart and volunteered for a number of church activities including the ACW, coffee hour and acting as a Lay Assistant. In doing so I feel that I’m a part of a warm, welcoming and generous community. I look forward to coming to church every Sunday.
