Message from Jennifer Blatherwick, ED of Access Youth

Please share our thanks with your congregation. Thank you so much for hosting us over the past months, you stepped in and allowed our program to continue at a very difficult time. Because of your partnership, we were able to deliver more than 800 hampers, which works out to just over 3000 meals for people in our community.  That doesn’t include the donation of oil and salt, and the meals (via Spring Street Community Kitchen) that St. John’s generously donated, which our families deeply appreciated.

The flower basket at the altar is gifted by Access Youth, in appreciation.

Vivian continues to be in good spirits while receiving immunology treatment every 3 weeks, for another year. She is able to walk with crutches for more than a few steps, but relies on a wheelchair for outdoor trips.

And she does not need a headscarf anymore!

She thanked everyone in the Parish for their prayers, love, support, flowers and nutritious food.

INFORMATION

Design of Souvenir Programme Cover

As announced last Sunday, we are looking for a design for the above. We would like your input on what should be included. Please forward all ideas to Rohini at news@stja.ca by 28 July, 2024.

High Tea – Thursday August 15, 1 – 3 pm

One of the main fundraisers for the church, this event is for friends and family of the Parish.

As it was a hit last year with the “Bring Your Own China”, we will be doing this again this year. We invite you to bring your personal teapots, cups & saucers, and 3 tier serving stands and these should be brought on the day of the tea. You are encouraged to “buy a table” of 4s, 6s or 8s for your family or besties. Tickets are on sale at $40, and as it is limited to only 60 seats, you may want to get yours from Antoinette at toni.woodman@shaw.ca or Sue Meredith at smeredith@shaw.ca

If anyone who has 3 tier serving stands that we can borrow, it will be very much appreciated. Please contact Ferne mfernem@icloud.com or Ann cannadairaustin@gmail.com

We will run for June & July, and then we will switch to Flour and Rice for August and September.

Please pick up a brown paper bag at church to announce your pledge to support these families and bring it back with cooking oil and/or salt.

Antoinette Woodman‘s memories

When immigrating to Canada, we lived on the north shore and attended St. Simon’s Anglican church in Deep Cove, North Vancouver.  We actually got married in this quaint little church.  Sadly, the church doesn’t exist any longer, and now there is a daycare.

Then we moved to Burnaby and joined St. Stephen’s Anglican church on Cameron Street.  After 3.5 years, we moved to Coquitlam and continued at St. Stephens.  However, we were on the lookout for a church closer to home.  I worked in Vancouver at the time and took transit.  I noticed St. John’s from the bus and thought to myself that perhaps I should join here as it’s closer to my home.  I came in the summer of 1987 by myself.   The ushers immediately knew I was not a regular parishioner and invited me to coffee in the hall after the service, where I was warmly welcomed by everyone.  Needless to say, I continued coming to St. John’s and am still here today.  I did not just feel the warm embrace of the parishioners and clergy, but also the spiritual embrace.  Father Ron Sands was the priest at this time.

Now for the actual memories I can remember throughout the years since 1987.

In November of that same year, I remember helping Joanne Walton at the jewellery table at the annual bazaar.  I was highly pregnant then, as our son was born in December of 1987. He was baptized in January 1988 by Father Ron Sands.

I have been involved in numerous volunteering roles since 1988, i.e. Sunday School coordinator and teacher until 1992, envelope secretary, ACW treasurer and stocking the kitchen with coffee supplies.

I remember entering the weekly offerings manually in a big register.  Tax receipts were handwritten in February of each year.  I can’t remember the actual year when Father Ron Barnes purchased a computer for the church.  Since then, the weekly offerings were done on the computer which was a lot faster.

I also remember helping the late Lauren Savage on Saturdays with photocopying and folding the pew bulletins for the Sunday services.  It was somewhere off-site.  At that time, there was no photocopier in the church office.

There were summer picnics at various parks, such as Rocky Point Park, Old Orchard Park and even at Alouette lake.  Outdoor services were held prior to the fun and games of these picnics.

There were fund-raising dinners with silent auctions in the church hall, spearheaded and catered by Brenda Binns and Ferne Malcolm.

What St. John’s means to me

St. John’s is a caring, warm and welcoming community.  During all these years, St. John’s has been my pillar of strength.   As a family, we had our challenges with health issues which required major surgeries.  The parishioners and clergy enveloped us with prayer.  A parishioner or two would deliver a home-cooked meal and goodies which was totally unexpected, but that is what St. John’s community is all about.

St. John’s is my spiritual home.
