NEW THIS WEEK
Stewardship Reflection
John 6:24-35 – Prepared by Van. Dr. M. Pollesel
Jesus talks about satisfying individuals’ hunger and thirst. Sorry Coke; sorry McDonald’s
— a faithful steward knows WHO can truly satisfy!
E-Postle – Word doc to remain
Last week we posted that we will not include a word document for the E-Postle. We had requests to include that, so it will remain.
Late Summer Community Event
Let’s gather for some fun outside of the church walls!
We would like to organize a movie night for the parish at Coquitlam Silvercity theatre. We would like to poll a sample of the parish with a few questions to help us to plan this event. The survey will allow the first 25 people to submit responses which should be a big enough sample for us to start planning. Please click on the link below and complete the survey ASAP so we can schedule the event.

New challenge to support Access Youth.
Access Youth still need our help!
They are short of some basic cooking staples and our parish has committed to help them.
Show them you care with a donation of: Rice and/or Flour
We will run this challenge for the month of August and September.
Please pick up a paper bag at church to announce your pledge to support these families and bring it back with rice and/or flour.
As a reminder, we are only collecting these 2 items. Please do not bring in other items as this does not operate like a food bank. They prepare meal kits for families to cook a meal together. They distribute required portions of ingredients to prepare the meal they are delivering.
For info on Access Youth and what they do, please log in to: https://accessyouth.org/youth-gour-made/

Memories and Photos for Commemorative Book
Thanks to all who have contributed to this. May I ask all who have shared to please forward a headshot photo to accompany your memories for print. Also, for those who will be sharing in the coming weeks, please forward both prose and photos to news@stja.ca by 15 August, otherwise we will not be able to print your sharing.
Vivian continues to be in good spirits while receiving immunology treatment every 3 weeks, till the end of 2025. She is now able to walk with a walker and took a walk round the block this week.
She thanked everyone in the Parish for their prayers, love, support, flowers and nutritious food, and hope that we still remember what she looks like!

Jan and David Gordon
Jan and I are pleased to tell you our story of coming to and stopping at St. John’s. But first a little bit of history on our journey here. Jan’s a “cradle” Anglican and christened in St. Nicholas, the Royal Naval Barracks Church, at HMS Drake in Plymouth, Devon, where her parents were married after the war.
l, on the other hand was a “cradle” Belfast Presbyterian, then a Methodist when our family moved. Upon visiting family in Northern Ireland and after not going to church for many years, I read C.S. Lewis’s book “Mere Christianity” on the Liverpool to Belfast ferry and returned to the fold, albeit to a Congregational church which was not the friendliest of places. Jan was living just outside Bath with her parents and we were married in 1975 at St. John the Baptist church in the village of Batheaston in Somerset. I was confirmed into Anglicanism prior to our marriage. My parents and other family came over for the wedding. I was a trifle nervous how my father would take to the service being a loyal “Orange Man” and indeed, when we knelt to pray, I heard him say to my mother, “Ginny, he’s marrying a Catholic!”
Jan and I, both nurses, joined St. James’s Church in the centre of Bristol and our first daughter Katherine was christened there. Our other daughter, Elizabeth was christened in St. Michael and All Angels, Bishopston just before we packed up and moved to Canada.
In 1981, we left England and settled in the town of Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta. We attended St. George’s Anglican Church which was thriving with young families and we were both involved in all aspects of church life. Sadly, as with so many of today’s churches, it has become predominantly frequented by only seniors. Our two daughters, after marriage, moved to Coquitlam and Port Moody and executed not too subtle pressure for us to move to be closer to them, especially when grandchildren came into the picture. So, in 2009 we bought our condo on Town Centre Blvd, and looked for a church that would have us. We chose St. John’s for several reasons chiefly of which, as many others have said, the people in the pews were actively friendly and welcoming. We felt at home straight away. When the choir found out we sang in the choir in Alberta, they asked us to join them. We also felt more at home in a smaller church and one with a bit of history behind it. We were periodic, seasonal visitors but were always greeted with smiles and enthusiasm as we climbed the stairs from the choir room to join the choir. We knew we were always welcome and as a result, BC started to really feel like home! Jan who sees the hand of God in everything pointed out that the crocheted picture of “The Good Shepherd “on the church wall was the same the one that hung in our Fort Saskatchewan church. It turned out that the two ladies who made them were related. Joyce Nelson in St. George’s was the sister-in-law of Ieleen McKinney here. Jan felt this was indeed a sign! Thank you all for being who you are and for giving Jan and I a home amongst you. God Bless.
