NEW THIS WEEK

Stewardship Reflection

Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 – Prepared by Van. Dr. M. Pollesel

Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus reminds them that: ‘‘this people honours me with their lips, but their heart stays away from me.’ It kind of frightens me that he might be able to say the same about me!

Late Summer Community Event

Let’s gather for some fun outside of the church walls!

We would like to organize a movie night for the parish at Coquitlam Silvercity theatre. We would like to poll a sample of the parish with a few questions to help us to plan this event. The survey will allow the first 25 people to submit responses which should be a big enough sample for us to start planning. Please click on the link below and complete the survey ASAP so we can schedule the event.

New challenge to support Access Youth.

Access Youth still need our help!

They are short of some basic cooking staples and our parish has committed to help them.

Show them you care with a donation of: Rice and/or Flour

We will run this challenge for the month of August and September.

Please pick up a paper bag at church to announce your pledge to support these families and bring it back with rice and/or flour.

As a reminder, we are only collecting these 2 items.  Please do not bring in other items as this does not operate like a food bank.  They prepare meal kits for families to cook a meal together. They distribute required portions of ingredients to prepare the meal they are delivering.

For info on Access Youth and what they do, please log in to: https://accessyouth.org/youth-gour-made/

Vivian continues to be in good spirits while receiving immunology treatment every 3 weeks, till the end of 2025. She is now able to walk with a walker and took a walk round the block this week.

She thanked everyone in the Parish for their prayers, love, support, flowers and nutritious food, and hope that we still remember what she looks like!

High Tea – Thursday August 15, 1 – 3 pm

One of the main fundraisers for the church, this event is for friends and family of the Parish. As it was a hit last year with the “Bring Your Own China”, we will be doing this again this year. We invite you to bring your personal teapots, cups & saucers, and 3 tier serving stands and these should be brought on the day of the tea. You are encouraged to “buy a table” of 4s, 6s or 8s for your family or besties.

Tickets are on sale at $40, and as it is limited to only 60 seats, you may want to get yours now from Antoinette at toni.woodman@shaw.ca or Sue Meredith at smeredith@shaw.ca

Debora Jones-Akiyama

I definitely have church in my blood. My grandparents on both sides helped start congregations: donating land and sourcing construction material. My parents were always very active in the church community, and they made sure that my siblings and I attended church every Sunday. I was well-steeped in the Anglican tradition, so I can’t explain how I could have made the blunder that I did shortly after joining St John’s.

Shinji and I moved to Port Moody in July, 2000. I decided to come and check out St John’s. I wasn’t sure what I’d find, and I wasn’t very happy with Shinji for making me leave my beloved church in Richmond. I entered through the hall, and was greeted by Doreen Brown who showed me photos of the church’s 100th anniversary celebrations, Cathy Hall was the rector, and after church, Anne Anchor and I spoke about one day doing some sort of Bible study. By the time I left that day, I knew I had found my new spiritual home.

I was invited to come to an ACW meeting where I started getting to know many of the ladies of the congregation. Then one Sunday morning Cathy invited the members of a ladies’ group to stand. I thought she was talking about the ACW, so although I was only a very recent member, I thought I would be brave and stand up. About 6 or 8 others also stood. I wondered why many of the others I had met at the meeting weren’t standing. And then horrified, I realized that the members of the Altar Guild had been invited to stand because this beautifully quilted hanging which they had designed and made, was being dedicated. I had had nothing to do with the project and was now facing a dilemma: do I sit down suddenly and draw even more attention to myself? I was mortified! What must the Altar Guild think of me? They’re going to think I’m a great big liar. Somehow, I sank back into my seat.

After church, I was approached by a couple of ladies from the guild, and I thought, “Oh no, here it comes!” And I was right. They asked me if I’d like to join Altar Guild. What could I do? It was one of those spirit moments. I was being given a chance to make it right. I had to join, and now I’m stuck, but I have some hope.

A precedent has been set. Recently, Rosa was allowed to retire from Altar Guild after 50 years of service. By my calculations, this means that I have another 26 years to go, and then I am out. But until then, I’ll keep showing up to count wafers and pour wine and polish the brass because that’s what St John’s people do. They show up. We show up on Sunday morning to worship in community, we show up to teach Sunday school, and serve coffee after church. We show up at your door with curry puffs during Covid lockdown. We check on one another in family and health crises. We celebrate the lives of one another; in fact, a number of brothers and sisters from this church made the trip to Richmond to help me and my family say goodbye to my father. So, I pray that Shinji and I will be able to continue showing up for St John’s, the community that has meant so much to us.
