Stewardship Reflection

By Henri Nouwen

Loving the church often seems close to impossible. Still we must keep reminding ourselves that all people in the church – whether powerful or powerless, conservative or progressive, tolerant or fanatic – belong to that long line of witnesses moving through this valley of tears, singing songs of praise and thanksgiving, listening to the voice of their Lord. And eating together from the bread that keeps multiplying as it is shared. When we remember that, we may be able to say, “I love the church, and I am glad to belong to it.” Loving the church is our sacred duty. Without a true love for the church we cannot live in it in joy and peace. And without a true love for the church we cannot call people to it.

Your response: Are you a part of that long line of witnesses making their way home to the father?

Thank you from the Stewardship Team

Week One

This year the stewardship team decided that we would like to round off the summer with a rousing thank you to everyone at St. John’s for the gifts of volunteer hours and skills and funds they have given to our community over the last 12 months.

Each week for the next few weeks we will dedicate some space in the epostle and bulletin to thanking the groups of dedicated parishioners and staff that make our vibrant and warm community operate so effectively to the glory of God.

This week, our first round of thanks goes out to the teams of hardworking individuals who make up our parish council, our greeters, our sidespeople, readers, intercessors, lay assistants, sacristans, servers/crucifers, the Godly Play team, our counters, our choir, and of course our wonderful wardens. You are the ones who show up week in and week out rain or shine. Your passion for our community and its work is mirrored by your dedicated service. We humbly thank each and every one of you for all that you do.

  • The Stewardship Team

Guest Musician

We extend a warm welcome to Carmelle Mohr, who will be serving as guest musician at worship this Sunday, August 4, while LaRee is away.

New Members for the Altar Guild

The members of St. John’s Altar Guild are looking for some new members to join us.  We work in groups on a 4-week rotating schedule, usually on a Saturday morning, arranging flowers, cleaning the brass, setting up for the Eucharist and laundering the altar linens. Please speak to a member of the Altar Guild if you are interested in joining us. Contact us at altarguild@stja.ca.

Office Stat Holiday Closure

Please note that the parish office will be closed on B.C. Day, Monday August 5, and will reopen on Tuesday August 6.

Parish Thank-You Bouquets

  • To the cleaning crew who rolled up their sleeves to give the new rectory a top-to-bottom wipe-down before Vivian and Bascom moved in. Thank you, Terry, Joanne W, Doris, Tony L, Michael L, Alma, Josephine & May F. You guys rock!
  • To Tony L who painted the parking lot lines to help us park in a considerate fashion.

Parish Values

Our Parish Council has been working together over the past couple of months to create a draft of our “parish values”.  Parish values are a way for us to articulate “why” we do the things that we do, and will help clarify our parish decision-making in the future. These values will be on display in the parish hall for the next few weeks, and we invite everyone to take a look and give us feedback on them, as well as ask friends in the wider community for their feedback. Parish Council will be finetuning the parish values at our August meeting, incorporating this feedback.

A Birthday Celebration

We will be celebrating the birthdays of our parishioners that are 80 years old or older, who have birthdays between July to September, with a light lunch and birthday cake in the Parish Hall, at 1 pm on Wednesday August 21st. If you would like to attend please let Ann Adair-Austin know by August 14th by phone:

Stewardship Team

The stewardship team has begun meeting to develop a plan for this year and we are looking for volunteers to join us. Our hope is to ignite and explore passion as a reason for participating in our church family and to begin to realize each individual’s God-given unique talents and abilities that we can use to support our church and our mission in the world. If there is anyone who would like to join us in our efforts, please speak to or email Kristin Kuhn, Natasha MacDonald, or Tony Pellett, or call or email Jennifer in the office and she will hook you up with us. Come join us…it will be fun!!

Garage Sale

Just a friendly reminder that our Annual Garage Sale is coming up on Saturday, August 17, 9am-1pm. Please bring in your items to the PMC during office hours (Mon-Fri 9 until 1). This year we are also collecting good consignment quality clothing for our sale. Please remember, no electronics and no furniture.

Clarke Street Fire

Please join us in prayers for our neighbours who lost homes and businesses in the fire in the nearby 2400 block of Clarke Street last Sunday. The Port Moody community has jumped into action to support them, including this GoFundMe campaign started by a local business, which describes some potential ways to help: https://www.gofundme.com/f/clark-street-fire-victims-support-fund

Proteins needed for St. John’s Food Bank

Protein-rich foods are often the most expensive items for families to purchase when grocery shopping. People on limited budgets often cannot afford them and make do with stodgy foods to fill stomachs. Please help those who need them by donating the following to St. John’s Food Bank.

  • tinned salmon, tuna, chicken, beef (not all can eat pork products)
  • shelf stable nut butters
  • dried or tinned beans and peas
  • powdered or shelf-stable milks
  • meaty stews or soups
  • cans of vegetables

Bring your offerings on Sunday, arrange with the office to drop off during the week, or give some money to this ministry towards the purchase of fresh products.
