Stewardship Reflection
A prayer of self-dedication from the Book of Common Prayer:
“Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee and then use us we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of the people, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.”
Office Administrator
For those who missed last Sunday’s announcement, we are sad to bid farewell to Office Administrator Kelly Million, who is leaving our ministry team as of Jan. 22. We are very grateful for her ministry among us and we wish her the very best in all her future endeavors. Since that announcement, Kelly’s mother’s health has taken a turn for the worse, so Kelly has departed Jan. 17 to be with her and her family. Our prayers go with her in this time.
During the interim period before we hire our new Administrator, we are looking for parishioner volunteers to help in the office during the week. Please speak to Vivian, Ruby, or Geri if you are interested and able to assist. The official posting for this 16hrs/week job will be available in the next week, but please do begin asking around now in your networks for anyone who might feel called to join our ministry team in this role.
Parish Council nominations
Nominations for Parish Council are now open. There are two vacancies to fill but as always positions on Parish Council are elected at Vestry. Please see Geri or Rosa if you are interested.
Annual Vestry reports
Just a reminder that vestry reports are due. Thank you to all ministry leaders who have submitted your report – if you haven’t yet, please send to Ruby at peopleswarden@stja.ca as soon as possible.
School for Parish Development
Do you feel called to learn practical ways to work with others in our parish to grow and support ministries here at St. John’s? Looking to develop and add to your skills in ministry and organizational development? Open to getting to know and partner with others excited about mission and ministry growth from our diocese and elsewhere?
Our diocesan School for Parish Development is a great place to meet these desires, and we are delighted that Ruby Ng, Natasha Macdonald, and Kristin Kuhn currently make up the team being sent from St. John’s at this year’s School. Our parish hopes to continue being part of this School in future years – there is a summer one-week option and a 4-weekends option. See more information about the program at https://www.vancouver.anglican.ca/parish-development/school-for-parish-development, and talk to Ruby, Geri, or Vivian if you’re interested in this possibility.
St. Stephen’s Trivia Night
St. Stephen’s, Burnaby is hosting a Trivia Night on Saturday, Jan. 26, 7pm (doors open 6:30pm) to raise funds to replace the front door to their worship space. They are challenging neighbouring Anglican parishes to send a winning team! They are accepting teams of up to 8 people, $20 registration per person. Snacks, desserts, tea, and coffee will be served, there will be a cash bar, and there are prizes and bragging rights to be claimed! To register your team, email ststbby@shaw.ca.
Cold Weather Shelter volunteers needed
This March, St. Laurence, Coquitlam (with the Hope for Freedom Society) will host the Mat program at St. Laurence. The Mat Program provides shelter for up to 30 homeless persons each night. Volunteers are needed every day to provide a hot evening meal, breakfast, a bag lunch and clothing for shelter clients. Volunteers for shifts in the morning (5:30-7:30am) and evening (9-11pm), donations of goods, financial help, and prayers are all welcome.
A volunteer orientation session for those interested will be on Saturday, Feb. 9, 10-11am at St. Laurence (825 St. Laurence Street, Coquitlam). Sign-up sheets for volunteer shifts will be available then. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Program coordinator Julie Chuter at julchu@shaw.ca or 604.939.2788.
Proteins needed for St. John’s Food Bank
Protein-rich foods are often the most expensive items for families to purchase when grocery shopping. People on limited budgets often cannot afford them, and make do with stodgy foods to fill stomachs. Please help those who need them by donating the following to St. John’s Food Bank in January:
- tinned salmon, tuna, chicken, beef (not all can eat pork products)
- shelf stable nut butters
- dried or tinned beans and peas
- powdered or shelf-stable milks
- meaty stews or soups
- cans of vegetables
Bring your offerings on Sunday, arrange with the office to drop off during the week, or give some money to this ministry towards the purchase of fresh products.
