Saying Farewell but not Goodbye to Karen Evans

After 13 years in the parish office at St. John the Apostle, administrator Karen Evans is leaving her position to pursue a full-time vocation in foods ministry.  Starting April 4, 2018, Karen will be sous-chef at a new restaurant in Queensborough. She’s not afraid of long hours and hard work; she’s worked for the Church!  Karen’s love of feeding people showed itself through the Food Bank here at St. Johns as well as many parish events.  We will miss her personality in the office, but hope to see her as a parishioner after she settles into her new responsibilities.  The parish now begins the search process for a new office administrator.  In the meantime, the leadership will discern which duties can be at least temporarily taken on by volunteers in April.

3030 Gordon Homeless Shelter in Coquitlam

For the past 10 years, members of St. John’s have been supporting the Homeless in the Tri-Cities. During the time of the Cold Weather Mat Program we helped feed the homeless while they stayed at St. Andrew’s United Church. Now volunteers are helping in the clothing distribution room at the shelter at 3030 Gordon Ave in Coquitlam.

There are five volunteers who on a monthly rotational basis have been helping faithfully. We give thanks for their ministry to the vulnerable individuals in our community.  As with all volunteers there comes a time when they need to take a break or withdraw from a ministry. This is the case now and so the question is ….

ARE THERE OTHERS OUT THERE WHO WOULD BE WILLING, ON AN EVERY-OTHER-MONTH BASIS FOR 2 HOURS, TO HELP TIDY AND SORT THE CLOTHING DONATED? This is on Wednesdays 2:30 – 4:30 pm.

Please contact Ruby Ng or Anne Anchor if you feel you are able to help with this ministry.

 Spring Clean-up

The A.C.W. is organizing a ‘Spring Cleaning’ of the church on Wednesday March 21st at 9.30 am.  Inside jobs are being planned but self-starters are welcome to make the grounds tidy for Easter too.

Acknowledgement of Traditional Territory

At the St. Johns parish council meeting of February 26, 2018, a motion was passed to encourage all groups using the church facilities to acknowledge that they are meeting on territory that is the ancestral land of First Nations peoples.  A simple form at the beginning of your group’s time together can be adapted as part of your welcome/coming to order.  You could try:

As we gather on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish Nations, let us pray that the Spirit’s reconciling love will be with us.

Or

We acknowledge that we are meeting today on traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples, and are grateful to the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish, Musqueam, and Kwitwelam Nations.
