An Easter Message From Your Interim

As a society, we are not good at coping with death and loss.  Each of us has personal griefs and sorrows, and we tend to carry them privately because there is enough darkness in the world without dumping our own on others.  Holy Week is a struggle because it brings our pain to the surface and invites us to share a collective experience that is painful.  It would be more fun to celebrate Easter without going through Good Friday.  But when Our Lord confronts evil on the cross and dies, He gathers up our loss and makes a new meaning of it.  As a community of faith, and as persons of faith, we are confronted, comforted, and changed in the process.

We are a resurrection people.  We do not deny the reality of death, but we proclaim that it is not the end.  Life breaks forth from the tomb of our fears and grief, and claims us as part of a new creation.  And on the Easter road, we will be surprised by joy.

Yours in Christ, Stephanie+

 Stewardship Reflection

“Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory”                  (BAS Baptismal Prayer)

Where do I need God’s resurrection power most in my life, so that I may share more fully?

A Note From Karen Evans

To my friends at St. John’s, as I close this chapter of my life, I wish to take a moment to thank you all. When I started in the office my youngest daughter was 4, she is almost 17 now, time really does fly. I hope that over the past 13 years I have served you and the position of Parish Administrator well. It has been a humbling experience at times, you have trusted me with the day to day business of the office, your weddings, your baptisms and your funerals and much more. Please know I always had the best intentions and I am grateful for the time that I have spent here. Thank you to those who have taken the time to come and wish me well, it doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you for the cards, the hugs and the calls, they mean a lot to me.  God speed to you all and my advice during the transition, be kind to the next Administrator, it is not always as easy as it looks. My sincere thanks!

A Bonnet for the Easter Parade

All parishioners who would like are invited to wear an Easter bonnet or festive hat for the Easter morning celebrations.  There might be a small prize for a crowd-pleaser.

Office Volunteers for April

Several parishioners are stepping up to help keep office hours in April while we begin our search process for a new office administrator.  We still need a parish volunteer for Wednesday mornings.  We will try and keep the office open between 9 am and 1 pm, Monday through Thursday but it’s a good idea to ring first before you drop in to say hello.  Please continue to send emails to stjohn7@shaw.ca or leave a voice mail on the phone machine at 604-936-7762, which will be checked regularly.  If you can help, please speak to the priest or a warden.

NOTE that the parish office will be closed Monday April 2 – Wednesday April 4 for the Easter break.

ACW Drive for Baby Items

The next Anglican Church Women’s meeting is Thursday April 19th at 7 pm. The A.C.W. will be collecting new (unused) baby items for our annual layette. These items are collected and bundled together into a ‘layette’ (everything a new baby would need for up to 18 months). Some are packed in with the Bales to the North outreach program, and some are sent out locally to low income parents. If any member of the Parish would like to make a contribution to this outreach it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a list of suggestions for items that are needed, given in order of preference for those items most required, but all items are gratefully received:

  • Receiving Blankets – Hooded Bath Towels
  • Burp Cloths – Small Size toiletries (no baby powder please)
  • Teething Toys – Baby Wipes (small package)
  • Comb/Brush – Cloth Diapers (flannelette)
  • Onesies (12 &18 mths) – Sleepers (18 mths)
  • 2 Piece Outfits (12 mths) – Jackets/Hats/Mitts/Bootees
  • Knitted or Fleece Blankets

Movie Fundraiser for the Birds Nest

Hockey fans and those wanting to deepen indigenous understandings: there will be a special screening of the movie “Indian Horse” Thursday April 5th at Landmark Cinemas 12 in Guildford, 1501-101 Avenue, Surrey.  Doors open at 6:15 pm and the show starts at 7:00 pm.  This is a fundraiser for the Birds Nest Ministry, which supports the educational goals of First Nations youth and has a special program to connect youth with hockey mentors.  Tickets are $12 each and we need them paid in advance so we can pay the theatre.   Anyone unable to attend who would like to donate a ticket for a Bird’s Nest member to attend is welcome to do so.  Entrance can be purchased via pay pal, etransfer, cheque or cash.  Cheques should be made payable to Denise Trottier.  Cash can be given to Natasha McDonald.  The email for e-transfer or pay pal is denisetrottier@hotmail.com.  Here is a link to the movie trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02cyFlnvA4s
